The Future Of Cycling According To Industry Leaders
The Velo-city 2016 Global Conference , organized by the city of Taipei last February 27-March 01, was a premier worldwide event about the evolution of cycling.
Some of the top industry leaders lined-up to speak for cycling advocacy and collaboration with governments. Both Presidents of Trek and Giant assisted in order to defend a clear message: getting more people on bikes more often, brings better business. But how much better ?
A Target Market of Over 4 Billion New Customers
Trek President John Burke affirmed that if cycling reached the 26% of modal share, as it is now in the Netherlands, the industry would grow 5 times its current size. Giant President Tony Lo added that by the time we achieve that goal, the cycling industry would have over 4 billion extra customers. “Our target market is 4.3 billion people on the planet who don’t cycle yet”, he confirmed.
But how to gain that milestone? According to Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike systems, the secret ingredients are Governments and their investments. “It is not enough to have opinion makers, it is not enough to have technology, we need to have the proper infrastructures. Only then can the sales go up. And who can make the infrastructures? Cities and local governments”.
Thanks to Velo-city Taipei 2016 the cycling industry has gained a renewed conscience of its global dimension and has united voices behind a common vision: to grow the market for cycling through collaboration with cities, governments and consumers.
