Reinvent Your Journey

reinvent your journey

Statistics say…

only 5% of biketourers take a flight

Yes, it’s real! Only 5% of those who travel by bike take an airplane because it’s too expensive, difficult and stressful. For this reason tourers are completely losing the opportunity to discover places like…

“I LOVE TAKING AN IDEA… TO A PROTOTYPE AND THEN TO A PRODUCT THAT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE USE”
Susan Wojcicki – CEO of YouTube

When the goal is to create the ultimate bike trailer in the market, time, technology and testing are everything. For months we designed, 3D printed  and messed up with iron and fiberglass, until we came up with a fully functional model. It had steel inserts to fit the mechanical parts and welded metal to hack some bike parts to fit the trailer properly.

The tools we used for prototyping went from mainly evocative simulations and rudimentary acted-out scenarios or improvised props to detailed mock-ups of the system, the environment and the staff.

But usability isn’t something you just can cook up in any one phase of design. It must be developed and refined throughout the entire process. If you want the best end product, you have to anticipate real user scenarios from the prototyping phase. That’s when we decided to make it fun.

The best part of designing gear for touring is the fact that you need to travel. And cycle. So we got our bikes, we got our trailers, and we head up to the airport. Next flight was to Stockholm, Sweden. A wild scenario to check out how our hardcore prototype would react in real life.e are a bunch of lucky

We are a bunch of lucky people, so and for this occasion, we counted with the unconditional support of Goalzero, CinelliHeimplanet, EVOC and Loopwheel. They provided us not only with the equipment required for this adventure but also with professional tips to make it happen.

10 days and 1300km were ahead us. We designed the perfect route to made a high-intensity test based on a medium-long distance bike trip. All the coordinations were adjusted to the smallest detail and we were ready to ride for more than 100km per day.

But no matter how good you plan, weather is unpredictable. At the arriving constant rain followed us from the assembling part to the first 80kms. Incredibly the water-proof tight worked out and all the electronics gear arrived safe and dry.

The testing was carried with one prototype and two bike trailers of competitors alongside, which lead us to fully evaluate the conceptual designs and make improvements. Safety was one of the most important facts for us. We wanted to make sure the bike trailer isn’t inherently dangerous or dangerous if misused. All possible risks were determinate, as well as how high the odds are and how serious the outcome would be.

bike tourism summer 2016

We proudly announce that we won the race. The structure of our Sentier Bike Trailer hold the 1300km, while one our competitors didn’t make it to the end of the trip. It was a complete boost of motivation, satisfaction, and energy for the development of the. And for the team.

Back home, with the evaluation done, we are madly working to improve and ultimate materials, stage, and technological features for a new generation of bike trailers. We are obsessed in every single detail involved, so before heading the assembly line all has to go off without a hitch.

Cycle Life Beyond Mountain Biking

Cycle Life Beyond Mountain Biking

“MAY YOUR TRAILS BE CROOKED, WINDING, LONESOME, DANGEROUS, LEADING TO THE MOST AMAZING VIEW.”
Edward Abbey

I fancied mountain biking about 10 years ago. I had always loved hiking in the Dolomites though the descent part of the excursions were not that fun. I was somehow caught by the idea of explore the same footpaths and discover many more on a bicycle.
As I pedaled every weekend for a few hours, faithfully along the off roads suggested by my book guide, I soon realized what the difference of level meant on mountain biking. Chances are, I took a severe steady training at the nearby gym during the winter or wouldn’t enjoy it at all. Next thing I was able to pedal my ascents far, maybe not at an amazing speed but with good preparation and resistance.

I felt increasingly great and mostly grateful for discovering, exploration and adrenaline. The Alps of the Trentino and South Tyrol regions offer some 1000km of trails to cross on two wheels, from paved cycling paths, pleasant forestry tracks, challenging steep slopes. All of that has been surrounded by astonishing views.

I eventually ended up buying a new bike in favor of efficiency in weight, suspensions and breaks. I have also upgraded my wardrobe on a regular basis and my shoes cost almost as much as my first bike.

Over the last year, during some relaxing flat ride along the river Adige, I started noticing the rising number of cyclists travelling from Germany to Italy. They all got bags attached to both the rear sides of the bike and the front wheels. They piled on tons of stuff. Most of them are just on normal looking shirts and shorts with regular shoes. Certainly, they all look like they are carrying everything with them like homeless’.

I marveled that some of them do travel for months over distances that seem far by car. At the same time, I was impressed by the opportunity of starting a different way of cycling whilst discovering new parts of the world.

In spite I am not a proven bike tourist, I have realized some topics that make bike touring a different approach compared to mountain biking:

– everyone’s allocated time on a holiday is limited, however bike touring is not a competition. Speed or altitude reach is unimportant. The only important goal is that you make it at your destination by sunset every day of your tour;

– the weight of your bicycle is not an issue. Forget spending money on lightweight innertubes and, most of all, forget about carbon: frame, seat post, forks. No carbon for all of them, it is an inferior material in the touring world. Get yourself a good steel bike, that will be much easier to find somebody who can repair it;

– if you would like to travel without being marked as a cyclist, stop wearing your classic jersey and shorts. There are various clothing options like lightweight hiking shirts and shorts that still keep away sweat and moisture as well as quick to dry after a wash. Make sure you will look like a guy passing through town!

– spending money on expensive bike components and parts is not the priority in bike touring. It is rather more important to opt for what is easily available in most parts of the world or can be easily fixed. You may perhaps spend on good gear such as light tents, light sleeping bags or anything that is light and resistant.

Saying that, my next thing is STILL going to be an offroad bike adventure riding my double suspended mountain bike with a Sentier bike trailer!

“Ride your bike to enjoy a travel without hesitation.”

Top European Bike Touring Itineraries for Short Escapes

SPAIN

With the warmest weather, the Spanish lands provide a rich mosaic of almost anything you ever dreamed. Mountains, endless seaside roads, cozy islands and vast llanuras. If you are looking for training Mallorca is the place to go for! Probably you already heard about La Palma since large part of the pro tour athletes use to take the winter training in this amazing location!! Watch out for the wind! Some days can be more challenging than an Alpine pass. If you are more interested in local culture you should opt then for the nice Granada to Seville route. It’s perfect to be done in three to four days, great landscape, culture and food of course!

FRANCE

The Cote d’Azur in this period is blessed by warm sun chilled by a fresh air typical for the Southern-France seaside. The itinerary we recommend is really rewarding, starting from Cannes, crossing San Tropez, Marseille, the National Parc of Camargue and finally reach Montpellier in just four to five days. It’s an ideal path thanks to the railway network that can take you back to Paris in just a few hours.

CROATIA

The Southern part of Croatian coast is pretty warm and wild, there would be thousand of kilometers around here! You could even start from Trieste in Italy and across Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania down to Greece… but this is another story we are gonna talk later.

So far we can reveal that you can’t miss the amazing coast between Zadar, Sibenik, and Jasenice. Here you can already take a sunbath on the beach and in just some hours of convenient train visit Zagreb. The city is totally worth a couple days for visiting some of the most interesting museums in Europe.

ITALY

Our home. Maybe not the warmest itinerary but it’s well worth it. For the beginning of spring, we recommend Tuscany, world famous for the Eroica vintage bicycle race, wines, and its amazing culture and landscapes. The Garda Lake, situated in the north of Italy, has unique weather conditions, with a track between vineyards, lemon trees and olives plantations to be accomplished in a couple of days. Whenever you arrive at Riva del Garda (the northern part of the lake) we pretend you to visit us at our HQ in Rovereto! We are gonna be able to show you our facility and have a ride together. List that!

The Next Big Thing in Bike Touring

The Next Big Thing in Bike Touring

“ONE’S DESTINATION IS NEVER A PLACE, BUT A NEW WAY OF SEEING THINGS”
Henry Miller

Have you ever experienced the feeling when discovering a new place by bike? If you have, you probably agree that bike speed during bike touring is like a perfect speed, not too fast not too slow. A perfect rhythm to enjoy kilometers of landscape, nature, cultures, and wildlife. Bike travelling it’s a great mixture of sport, vacation and cultures exploration.

The vision of a bike traveler arriving on the horizon usually creates a deep feeling of empathy in the locals, I’m usually on the bike side so I can feel it really often. Most of the time people are curious about you, your trip and what have you seen day by day. It is a slow tourism option really rewarding in terms of community, locals and self-improvement.

Bike Touring Gear Innovation 2016 Trailer

Of course, travelling by is not quite easy and has prominent downsides. The sum of different amount of gear needed can be a big hassle depending on the trip you are taking and the terrain or journey characteristics.

One of the most used solutions are panniers, side bags usually made out of waterproof material that allow you to load your bike with all you need for you exploration. This option requests tailored supports fixed on you bike and some skills to drive the bike with up to 30 Kilos of load on it!

But there is a better solution. The next level approach it’s to use a bike trailer to be pulled behind your bike. Easier, safer, and more rewarding to your body after 8 hours of cycling. Believe me.

That’s why at Sentier Adventure Gear we decided to dedicate our first product to improve the bike touring experience through a new disruptive model of this trailer.

Bike Trailer Sentier

Sentier Bike Trailer for a Higher Level of Bike Touring

It’s amazing how bicycles and hardware gear has technologically evolved in the last 10 years. So many new materials, hundreds of new designs each year, and thousands of creative minds working in the industry to improve these amazing products.

It is sad though that the industry has seemed to forget one thing. In the last years, the bike trailer hasn’t experienced any significant performance evolution, until now!

We are working on a disruptive design to produce the most innovative and high-tech bike trailer in the market. It is born to help everybody to approach the bike touring in a smarter, easier and safer way.

After a long process and few prototypes, we achieved a Version 1.0 tested during 1.300 Km trip in the wilderness of Sweden land. During those 10 days, we got the chance to prove the reliability and decide all the final features to improve.

Since that day, and back in our Sentier HQ we are working day by day, close to our right partners, to produce this amazing gear so you can enjoy a higher level of bike holidays this summer.
