only 5% of biketourers take a flight

Yes, it’s real! Only 5% of those who travel by bike take an airplane because it’s too expensive, difficult and stressful. For this reason tourers are completely losing the opportunity to discover places like…

ISPO a dream come true!!

ISPO a dream come true!!

Hi Guys,

we are back in the office, one week after ISPO.  We have not realised  what happened in Munich yet…  We had the opportunity to present our Bike Trolley to the greatest companies and people of the outdoor industry. But let’s start from the beginning…

Andre shows the Bike Trolley to the EVOC team

When we had been selected at the ISPO Brandnew we knew that ISPO was not only an exhibition, it was the place to be for a young outdoor startup, the meeting point for all corporates and professionals in the outdoor industry. To whom who knows Andre, Sentier founder, this is a dream come true… Such an opportunity means of course a big responsibility to be properly organized, prepared and trained for it! Obviously we worked hard to get everything done for the show and we networked hardly with our partners to have the best materials.

In house custom made screen print

Prior the show we engaged with some other finalist brands of ISPO Brandnew. We discussed how we should improve our communication about ISPO. Some great ideas emerged so we achieved very good partnerships with some of them. Later we met in person with Enki Stove and Luma at the ISPO Brandnew. Full team ready! Andre, Massimo, Fabio and Nico.

When the fair started, we quickly understood that it would have been a terrific opportunity to meet specialists and companies. In 5 days we met hundreds of people freaking out for our company and products. Some of them were sport passionate and liked the Bike Trolley for personal use, others imaging their next great adventure! We were really glad that distributors from all the world came to our booth to discuss about the product and business opportunities. In addition, many retailers and competitors passed by our booth to have a touch and feel on the Bike Trolley as well as discover more about it. Some were so impressed to fire up a word of mouth with colleagues and friends.

Retailers and bike producers gave us valuable technical feedbacks, showing the market is ready for such an innovative concept of travelling… obviously made possible only with the Bike Trolley. Actually, our ISPO slogan was “Reinvent your Journey” cause we believe the product features enable more people to approach new ways of  travelling free.

Since Andre has been attending ISPO for the past 6 years this was a great opportunity to meet many friends and “fam” there. They work mainly in small and medium outdoor companies. It was for him a pleasure to show the Bike Trolley in every detail!

As many already know, ISPO is not only a business opportunity. Many big brands create parties and shows to entertain visitors and outdoor specialists. Moments that are the best ones to relax and enjoy after a hardworking day!

After a couple of hours of packing we were ready to leave Munich. In 5 days we enhanced our network in the industry, presented the product to commercial partners and had great fun!

1300Km of Swedish Wilderness

1300Km of Swedish Wilderness

Bike Trailer Sentier
Susan Wojcicki – CEO of YouTube

When the goal is to create the ultimate bike trailer in the market, time, technology and testing are everything. For months we designed, 3D printed  and messed up with iron and fiberglass, until we came up with a fully functional model. It had steel inserts to fit the mechanical parts and welded metal to hack some bike parts to fit the trailer properly.

The tools we used for prototyping went from mainly evocative simulations and rudimentary acted-out scenarios or improvised props to detailed mock-ups of the system, the environment and the staff.

But usability isn’t something you just can cook up in any one phase of design. It must be developed and refined throughout the entire process. If you want the best end product, you have to anticipate real user scenarios from the prototyping phase. That’s when we decided to make it fun.

bike holidays destinations europe 2016

The best part of designing gear for touring is the fact that you need to travel. And cycle. So we got our bikes, we got our trailers, and we head up to the airport. Next flight was to Stockholm, Sweden. A wild scenario to check out how our hardcore prototype would react in real life.e are a bunch of lucky

We are a bunch of lucky people, so and for this occasion, we counted with the unconditional support of Goalzero, CinelliHeimplanet, EVOC and Loopwheel. They provided us not only with the equipment required for this adventure but also with professional tips to make it happen.

10 days and 1300km were ahead us. We designed the perfect route to made a high-intensity test based on a medium-long distance bike trip. All the coordinations were adjusted to the smallest detail and we were ready to ride for more than 100km per day.

But no matter how good you plan, weather is unpredictable. At the arriving constant rain followed us from the assembling part to the first 80kms. Incredibly the water-proof tight worked out and all the electronics gear arrived safe and dry.

The testing was carried with one prototype and two bike trailers of competitors alongside, which lead us to fully evaluate the conceptual designs and make improvements. Safety was one of the most important facts for us. We wanted to make sure the bike trailer isn’t inherently dangerous or dangerous if misused. All possible risks were determinate, as well as how high the odds are and how serious the outcome would be.

bike tourism summer 2016

We proudly announce that we won the race. The structure of our Sentier Bike Trailer hold the 1300km, while one our competitors didn’t make it to the end of the trip. It was a complete boost of motivation, satisfaction, and energy for the development of the. And for the team.

Back home, with the evaluation done, we are madly working to improve and ultimate materials, stage, and technological features for a new generation of bike trailers. We are obsessed in every single detail involved, so before heading the assembly line all has to go off without a hitch.

5 Reasons to cycle on a daily basis

5 Reasons to cycle on a daily basis

More energy, lower costs, extra fun, no traffic frustration, faster way to work, longer life, improved health,…cycling makes you a better person in many ways. Leaving your car at home is going to help pollution both locally and globally.

But this month, there are even more reasons to ride your bike on a daily basis. 3o Days of Biking is a pledge to ride your bike every day in April, any distance, any destination. Anyone can share their adventures online with hashtag #30daysofbiking. For every 2 pledges, they will be donating $1 to World Bicycle Relief. A charity specializing in large-scale, comprehensive bicycle programs by providing supply chain management, technical knowledge and logistics expertise across rural Africa through sustainable work-to-own and study-to-own programs. Fast Company has recently named World Bicycle Relief  among their Most Innovative Companies of 2016.

So if you are not a cycle enthusiast already, here are the 5 proven benefits bikes offer in oder to improve your life, and others. Join the nation.

reasons for cycle to work

1 | Happier feeling

Apart from the increased self-esteem and confidence that getting fitter and leaner will give you, time spent outdoor will cheer you up automatically. Sunlight has the power to boost your levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin and Vitamine-D.

More daylight in your life will even help you sleep better and longer. Stanford University School of Medicine researchers asked sedentary insomnia sufferers to cycle for 20-30 minutes every other day. The result? The time to fall asleep was reduced by half, and they dream for almost an extra hour a night.

2 | Longer lives

Lower the risk of  cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, all types of cancer, high blood pressure and obesity with aerobic exercise such as cycling, say major Medical and Research Institutions. Also, studies from Purdue University in the US have shown that regular cycling – even as little as 20 miles a week – can cut your risk of heart disease by up to 50 percent.

3 | Improve your Community

Bicycling is the most energy efficient form of transportation ever invented. By cycling to work, home, school or the shop, you will escape from the traffic jam hell and the parking place nightmare. It increases mobility for those who don’t have access to motor transport, who don’t qualify to drive a car or can’t afford motor transport.

Bicycling in your neighborhood is a great way to meet your neighbors and build community.
Camaraderie of cyclists makes it is to connect and socialize with like-minded people at predictable commute time.

4 | Get leaner

The body’s metabolic rate – the efficiency with which it burns calories and fat – raises during a bike ride but even for several hours after! So good news. “Even after cycling for 30 minutes you could be burning a higher amount of total calories for a few hours after you stop,” says Mark Simpson of Loughborough University.

Imagine yourself becoming fitter without really trying, without spending extra time training, and feeling and looking younger. According to the National Forum for Coronary Heart Disease Foundation in the US, regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equal to that of a person 10 years younger.

Employees who ride a bike, walk or take public transportation to work have a lower body mass index and body fat percentage than people who drive to work, according to a study from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

healthy reasons to cycle

 5 | Environmental Consciousness

When you are cycling, you are not contaminating the atmosphere. Zero pollution. Even more, it takes around five percent of the materials and energy used to make a car to manufacture a bike. Bikes are efficient machines too – you travel around three times as fast as walking for the same amount of energy and, taking into account the ‘fuel’ that you put in your ‘engine’, you can do the equivalent of 2,924 miles to the gallon.

Transport is on its way to overtaking industry as the major contributor to CO2 emissions in the UK. Vehicles give out about 70 per cent of air pollution in UK towns and cities, and 22 percent of the UK’s total CO2 emissions. Going by bike contributes nothing, and either walking or cycling much more for local journeys would reduce our dependence on oil.

If all commutes in England under five miles were completed by bike instead of car they would save a collective 44,000 tonnes of CO2 every week, the equivalent of heating 17,000 houses. Given that the average speed of rush hour traffic in London is 7mph and a reasonable average cycling speed is 13mph, that makes commuting by bike almost twice as fast as taking the car. Oh, and 10 bikes can be parked in one car space.

If you still need extra motivation, we totally recommend you the documentary Bikes vs. Cars. Enjoy and Ride…

Cycle Life Beyond Mountain Biking

2017-06-20T09:32:17+00:00 Active Travel, Bike Tourism, Outdoor Experiences|

Cycle Life Beyond Mountain Biking

Edward Abbey

I fancied mountain biking about 10 years ago. I had always loved hiking in the Dolomites though the descent part of the excursions were not that fun. I was somehow caught by the idea of explore the same footpaths and discover many more on a bicycle.
As I pedaled every weekend for a few hours, faithfully along the off roads suggested by my book guide, I soon realized what the difference of level meant on mountain biking. Chances are, I took a severe steady training at the nearby gym during the winter or wouldn’t enjoy it at all. Next thing I was able to pedal my ascents far, maybe not at an amazing speed but with good preparation and resistance.

I felt increasingly great and mostly grateful for discovering, exploration and adrenaline. The Alps of the Trentino and South Tyrol regions offer some 1000km of trails to cross on two wheels, from paved cycling paths, pleasant forestry tracks, challenging steep slopes. All of that has been surrounded by astonishing views.

mountain bike innovation 2016

I eventually ended up buying a new bike in favor of efficiency in weight, suspensions and breaks. I have also upgraded my wardrobe on a regular basis and my shoes cost almost as much as my first bike.

Over the last year, during some relaxing flat ride along the river Adige, I started noticing the rising number of cyclists travelling from Germany to Italy. They all got bags attached to both the rear sides of the bike and the front wheels. They piled on tons of stuff. Most of them are just on normal looking shirts and shorts with regular shoes. Certainly, they all look like they are carrying everything with them like homeless’.

I marveled that some of them do travel for months over distances that seem far by car. At the same time, I was impressed by the opportunity of starting a different way of cycling whilst discovering new parts of the world.

mtb innovation 2016

In spite I am not a proven bike tourist, I have realized some topics that make bike touring a different approach compared to mountain biking:

– everyone’s allocated time on a holiday is limited, however bike touring is not a competition. Speed or altitude reach is unimportant. The only important goal is that you make it at your destination by sunset every day of your tour;

– the weight of your bicycle is not an issue. Forget spending money on lightweight innertubes and, most of all, forget about carbon: frame, seat post, forks. No carbon for all of them, it is an inferior material in the touring world. Get yourself a good steel bike, that will be much easier to find somebody who can repair it;

– if you would like to travel without being marked as a cyclist, stop wearing your classic jersey and shorts. There are various clothing options like lightweight hiking shirts and shorts that still keep away sweat and moisture as well as quick to dry after a wash. Make sure you will look like a guy passing through town!

– spending money on expensive bike components and parts is not the priority in bike touring. It is rather more important to opt for what is easily available in most parts of the world or can be easily fixed. You may perhaps spend on good gear such as light tents, light sleeping bags or anything that is light and resistant.

Saying that, my next thing is STILL going to be an offroad bike adventure riding my double suspended mountain bike with a Sentier bike trailer!

“Ride your bike to enjoy a travel without hesitation.”

Unsolved Challenges of Cycle Tourism so far

Unsolved Challenges of Cycle Tourism so far

best roads and gear for bike tourism
Sir Rannulph Fiennes

…and there is not a bad bike travelling day if you get the right gear!

When planning to go into bike touring, the first challenge is choosing exactly the right bike. Aluminium, carbon or steel? Fixed or suspended forks? What’s the best size of wheels? Will the bike be affected by the panniers that I will need to fix on it?

Packing is actually the second trial to resolve. How to take all the stuff you need for your road trip or cycling holidays? While panniers seem a fast solution, that provides easy access to stored things, they are quite uncomfy when carrying them one-by-one into your tent or hotel room. Even more, they can cause broken spokes, particularly in the back wheel, increase tire wear and wind resistance and make your ride unstable.

In the other hand, bike trailers haven’t developed a big advance in the last years. The still haven’t solved the difficulty to bring it on a train, plane or hotel room, or the sorting of your luggage into different parts and small storage, providing an uncomfortable bike experience. Until now…

After some years and tours of research, at Sentier we came up with an innovative progressive bike trailer design to help you reach your destination, quick release your trailer, leave it in the lodge or a safe location and visit the surroundings, even on your own crazy carbon, naked bike masterpiece.

Whereas panniers reduce stability and manoeuvrability, no doubt that the lowered centre of gravity provided by a bike trailer will provide you a neutral cycling experience. From time to time you may find yourself looking back checking whether the trailer is still firmly hooked at your vehicle.

The ability to keep your bicycle in its original weight will let you drive safely, no matter how long is your journey. The wheels will never be stressed by overload so spokes and rims will not be compromised.

While storing bulky, heavy items like camping tools or even the luggage of your travelling fellow, a trailer will be handy for home use as well as touring.

Sentier Adventure Gear will deliver to market a disruptive product that will enhance the experience of bike touring. It gives you the freedom to carry all the luggage while riding your preferred bike, whether a race, city or a mountain bike, clean of rack supports.

The Future Of Cycling According To Industry Leaders

Bicycle Industry Taipei 2016

A Global Cycle Dimension

Fred Kent

The Velo-city 2016 Global Conference , organized by the city of Taipei last February 27-March 01, was a premier worldwide event about the evolution of cycling.

Some of the top industry leaders lined-up to speak for cycling advocacy and collaboration with governments. Both Presidents of Trek and Giant assisted in order to defend a clear message: getting more people on bikes more often, brings better business. But how much better ?

Conference Bicycle 2016

A Target Market of Over 4 Billion New Customers

Trek President John Burke affirmed that if cycling reached the 26% of modal share, as it is now in the Netherlands, the industry would grow 5 times its current size. Giant President Tony Lo added that by the time we achieve that goal, the cycling industry would have over 4 billion extra customers. “Our target market is 4.3 billion people on the planet who don’t cycle yet”, he confirmed.

But how to gain that milestone? According to Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike systems, the secret ingredients are Governments and their investments. “It is not enough to have opinion makers, it is not enough to have technology, we need to have the proper infrastructures. Only then can the sales go up. And who can make the infrastructures? Cities and local governments”.

Thanks to Velo-city Taipei 2016 the cycling industry has gained a renewed conscience of its global dimension and has united voices behind a common vision: to grow the market for cycling through collaboration with cities, governments and consumers.

At Sentier Adventure Gear we believe in the role of cycling, not only as a leisure and adventure activity but as an everyday mode of transport, as a smart solution for urban mobility.

As Robert Wu from KMC remarked, “Three are the main challenges the world has to face at present: climate change, urbanisation and obesity. The good news is that we already have the solution for the three of them: the bicycle”.

Top European Bike Touring Itineraries for Short Escapes

With the warmest weather, the Spanish lands provide a rich mosaic of almost anything you ever dreamed. Mountains, endless seaside roads, cozy islands and vast llanuras. If you are looking for training Mallorca is the place to go for! Probably you already heard about La Palma since large part of the pro tour athletes use to take the winter training in this amazing location!! Watch out for the wind! Some days can be more challenging than an Alpine pass. If you are more interested in local culture you should opt then for the nice Granada to Seville route. It’s perfect to be done in three to four days, great landscape, culture and food of course!

The Cote d’Azur in this period is blessed by warm sun chilled by a fresh air typical for the Southern-France seaside. The itinerary we recommend is really rewarding, starting from Cannes, crossing San Tropez, Marseille, the National Parc of Camargue and finally reach Montpellier in just four to five days. It’s an ideal path thanks to the railway network that can take you back to Paris in just a few hours.

The Southern part of Croatian coast is pretty warm and wild, there would be thousand of kilometers around here! You could even start from Trieste in Italy and across Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania down to Greece… but this is another story we are gonna talk later.

So far we can reveal that you can’t miss the amazing coast between Zadar, Sibenik, and Jasenice. Here you can already take a sunbath on the beach and in just some hours of convenient train visit Zagreb. The city is totally worth a couple days for visiting some of the most interesting museums in Europe.

Our home. Maybe not the warmest itinerary but it’s well worth it. For the beginning of spring, we recommend Tuscany, world famous for the Eroica vintage bicycle race, wines, and its amazing culture and landscapes. The Garda Lake, situated in the north of Italy, has unique weather conditions, with a track between vineyards, lemon trees and olives plantations to be accomplished in a couple of days. Whenever you arrive at Riva del Garda (the northern part of the lake) we pretend you to visit us at our HQ in Rovereto! We are gonna be able to show you our facility and have a ride together. List that!

Are already checking out where to head up first? Write us a comment and we will be happy to share with you more tips and ideas about bike holidays. Always.

The Next Big Thing in Bike Touring

The Next Big Thing in Bike Touring

Henry Miller

Have you ever experienced the feeling when discovering a new place by bike? If you have, you probably agree that bike speed during bike touring is like a perfect speed, not too fast not too slow. A perfect rhythm to enjoy kilometers of landscape, nature, cultures, and wildlife. Bike travelling it’s a great mixture of sport, vacation and cultures exploration.

The vision of a bike traveler arriving on the horizon usually creates a deep feeling of empathy in the locals, I’m usually on the bike side so I can feel it really often. Most of the time people are curious about you, your trip and what have you seen day by day. It is a slow tourism option really rewarding in terms of community, locals and self-improvement.

Bike Touring Gear Innovation 2016 Trailer

Of course, travelling by is not quite easy and has prominent downsides. The sum of different amount of gear needed can be a big hassle depending on the trip you are taking and the terrain or journey characteristics.

One of the most used solutions are panniers, side bags usually made out of waterproof material that allow you to load your bike with all you need for you exploration. This option requests tailored supports fixed on you bike and some skills to drive the bike with up to 30 Kilos of load on it!

But there is a better solution. The next level approach it’s to use a bike trailer to be pulled behind your bike. Easier, safer, and more rewarding to your body after 8 hours of cycling. Believe me.

That’s why at Sentier Adventure Gear we decided to dedicate our first product to improve the bike touring experience through a new disruptive model of this trailer.

Bike Trailer Sentier

Sentier Bike Trailer for a Higher Level of Bike Touring

It’s amazing how bicycles and hardware gear has technologically evolved in the last 10 years. So many new materials, hundreds of new designs each year, and thousands of creative minds working in the industry to improve these amazing products.

It is sad though that the industry has seemed to forget one thing. In the last years, the bike trailer hasn’t experienced any significant performance evolution, until now!

We are working on a disruptive design to produce the most innovative and high-tech bike trailer in the market. It is born to help everybody to approach the bike touring in a smarter, easier and safer way.

After a long process and few prototypes, we achieved a Version 1.0 tested during 1.300 Km trip in the wilderness of Sweden land. During those 10 days, we got the chance to prove the reliability and decide all the final features to improve.

Since that day, and back in our Sentier HQ we are working day by day, close to our right partners, to produce this amazing gear so you can enjoy a higher level of bike holidays this summer.
